Students & Classes

Thanks for your interest in square dancing in East Tennessee.  There are 14 clubs in this area, and if you join one of them you’ll become a member of an extended community of square dancers.

The Claxton Country Squares dances on the first and fourth Saturdays of each month at the Claxton Community Center, just east of the Bull Run Steam Plant.

If you’re new to Western Style Square Dancing, here are a few important details.

  • Most of the clubs in the area conduct weekly classes over a 7 to 9 month period, usually starting in September.
  • The first eighteen weeks of the lessons is devoted to Mainstream level calls.
  • Students typically have to take lessons for about 4 months before they’re able to  dance at the Mainstream level.
  • The Claxton club holds lessons on Monday nights from 6:30 to 9:00 and cost $6 per person per lesson.  The first lesson will be on September 18 with a free cookout and an introduction to square dancing.  Following weeks will be Plus lessons from 6:30 to 7:30, and Mainstream lessons from 7:30 to 9:00.  Plus lessons are $3 per person per lesson.
  • Some area clubs hold dances once per month and others twice per month, and we all visit each others clubs, so there are plenty of opportunities to dance and make friends doing it.
  • Dances typically cost from $5 to $8 and usually last 2 – 2½ hours.  Once you’ve learned and practiced the calls, you can attend mainstream or plus level dances anywhere in the country.  We’ve found square dancers to be a welcoming crowd everywhere we’ve visited and danced.
