About Us

Claxton Country Squares is a western style square dance club. This Club was established in 1986, by Bob and Elena Tonkin, and has been an established landmark ever since. The club is proud of our reputation of being the friendliest square dance club in the state of Tennessee. We are also proud to be led by our caller, Mr. Mike Hoose, who is very well known in the state of Tennessee and across the United States for his ability in calling square dances and teaching those who wish to learn this art. The classes are a lot of fun and offer an easy learning process with step-by-step instruction.

Our dances include both main stream and plus calls; additionally, most dances include a few line dances. Our club hosts dances on the first and fourth Saturdays of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Claxton Community Center on Edgemoor Road. (Directions). Other clubs in the area also host dances, so you will have lots of opportunities to dance and meet new people. We welcome all dancers to join us for fun and fellowship!

Mike Hoose - Club Caller

Mike Hoose has been calling and teaching square dancing since 1976. He currently teaches square dance classes in Knoxville and Claxton, Tennessee; as well as calling dances and events all over the southeast.

As a caller he has performed in most of the 50 states and several Canadian Provinces. He has called at sixteen National Square Dance Conventions and has been on the staff of several major festivals. For 25 years, Mike sang tenor and lead for the world-famous Red Boot Boys caller’s quartet. He was a featured caller in the 1982 World’s Fair. Mike now records on Red Boot Records, an internationally well-known square dance label.

Mike and his lovely wife, Glenda, live in Knoxville, Tennessee.
